Hans Bollongier
Haarlem 1598/1602 - 1672/75
A still life of parrot tulips, roses and other flowers, in a glass vase
signed and dated lower centre: HB. 1639.
oil on panel
unframed: oval, 35.8 x 26 cm.; 14⅛ x 10¼ in.;
framed: 52.1 x 42 cm.; 20½ x 16½ in.
The present work is a typical example of Hans Bollongier's intricately painted still lifes, for which he was much celebrated during his lifetime. His carefully composed bouquets of flowers, sillhouetted against a plain background, were strongly influenced by the style of leading still-life painter of the period, Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573–1621).
Bollongier often signed and dated his paintings, allowing art historians to establish a clear chronology of his work. This work is dated 1639, the same year he produced one of his finest compositions, in the colleciton of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.1
