Signed and dated, this painting by Jan Martszen the Younger shows a military engagement taking place between cavalry and foot soldiers. The scene is dominated by a soldier on horseback in the centre, firing a gun at his opponent. A man in red breeches runs away from the action, brandishing a standard against the smoky sky. Born in Haarlem, Martszen the Younger was an accomplished painter and engraver who specialised in military scenes.
