Folio (318 x 203 mm). Short fold tears, browned. Half green morocco slipcase, chemise.


Very rare first printing of Washington's sixth State of the Union Address, dealing largely with the recently quashed Whiskey Rebellion. He defends at length his controversial use of military power to suppress a tax revolt. "A very important expression of George Washington's philosophy of the role and power of the federal government when it faced the first serious domestic challenge to its authority" (Celebration).

ESTC lists only five copies and only one copy has surfaced at auction since 1930.
