Medal, bronze (48 mm diameter) dies by Samuel Brooks. GEO. WASHINGTON NATUS BORN VIRGINIA / FEB 11, 1732, reverse GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES, / 1775 / RESIGNED / 1783 / PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES 1789/ - / J. MANLY & C. 1790; Original dies; some scratches behind bust and some reverse weakness, otherwise very fine or better.


This is the first medal to honor George Washington produced in this country. They were advertised for sale in the Pennsylvania Packet andAdvertiser, March 3, 1790, for two dollars in bronze and four dollars in silver.
