Description

(Galloway, Joseph)

The examination of Joseph Galloway, Esq; Late Speaker of the House of Assembly of Pennsylvania. Before the House of Commons in a Committee on the American Papers. With Explanatory Notes. London: J. Wilkie, 1779

8vo (205 x 122 mm). Some spotting and repairs to title. Half calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered label to spine, edges speckled red.

First edition. After fleeing to Britain with his daughter in 1778, Joseph Galloway became one of the most outspoken American Loyalists in London. Galloway was critical of the conduct of General Howe and the British ministry following the evacuation of Philadelphia. In the present hearing, Lord Germain retaliated in part, interrogating Galloway in an attempt to discredit him. Galloway saw his testimony as a triumph, and purchased hundreds of copies.
