2000

The 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney is widely considered one of the most successful Olympic productions in recent history. Teams from 199 countries participated, and 80 countries brought home a medal, breaking the record held at the time. The US won 93 gold medals that year, and Vince “Vinsanity” Carter’s history-making dunk proved to be one of the most exciting and memorable highlights of the games.

Carter was a pivotal member of the Olympic USA basketball team, scoring an average of 14.8 points per game and achieving what would become known as the “Dunk of Death,” when he jumped France’s 7’2” Frederic Weis, performing one of the most impressive and iconic dunks in basketball history. Carter’s style on the court and dunking ability helped the US bring home a gold medal in Men’s Basketball.

This pair of Nike Shox was worn and signed by Vince Carter in 2000, during which time he played for the Toronto Raptors. The white and blue sneakers are signed by Carter on each toe in blue marker, with his name and his number, 15. Carter’s career honors include Rookie of the Year for the 1998-1999 season, followed by 8 consecutive All-Star nods. He retired as one of the game’s most iconic stars.

Nike’s Shox were originally designed in 2000 by sneaker guru Eric Avar, and achieved success with the help of Vince Carter in conjunction with Nike’s Alpha Project, which began in the late 1990s. The Alpha project worked with top-tier athletes to identify solutions to performance issues with the use of new and developing sneaker technologies. Carter has said, “the success of the [Dunk of Death] started the legend of the shoes. But I myself went to another level with them, too. I became a star player in the BB4.” After his success in the BB4, Nike would go on to create the Shox ‘VC’, Carter’s own signature Shox style.

The shoes are accompanied by an LOA from James Spence Authentication in regards to the signatures, and a Letter of Opinion from MEARS Authentication, LLC, with an “Authentic” Final Grade. The shoes are also accompanied by the original lot listing from Grey Flannel Auctions, which states provenance from a Raptors Assistant Coach.
