2008
One of the greatest of all-time, and perhaps the most electrifying player the game has known, Kobe Bryant ushered in a new era of “Showtime” basketball in Los Angeles. The only son of former Philadelphia 76ers player Joe "Jellybean" Bryant, Kobe rose to national prominence when he became the first guard in league history to be drafted out of high school. He would go on to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA title championships - including three consecutive NBA championships between 2000 and 2002 - become a two-time NBA finals MVP, and score 30,000 points in the process.
In addition to his NBA career, Kobe Bryant played a significant role in Team USA’s Olympic triumphs in 2008 and 2012. In the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, held in London, Bryant scored 17 points for team USA in their Gold Medal win. Bryant played alongside top scorer Dwyane Wade and basketball legend Lebron James to lead the USA team to a 118-107 victory over Spain. In May of this year, Kobe Bryant was officially posthumously inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His legacy as one of basketball’s greatest legends lives on.
Nike designed the Olympic Zoom Kobe VII during the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, held in London. This unreleased sample in a patriotic white, Obsidian and University Red color palette, was inspired by Team USA.
The shoes have a white ribbed upper supported by Kevlar Flywire cables in University Red. Each shoe has an Obsidian Swoosh on the lateral side, and a graphic of Kobe Bryant’s signature on each heel in white. The shoes’ “Attack Fast” insert is removable and features a Phylon midsole, and was one of two insoles originally included with the model. The other original insole, “Attack Strong,” is not included.
