Description

Nike, Nike Zoom S II

Cotton, Sandpaper, Leather

1985

The Bowerman Lab, part of Nike, produced innovative designs that pushed the boundaries of performance under the leadership of Bill Bowerman.

These shoes were modified in the 1980s by Bowerman Lab Product Engineer Mike Friton at Bill Bowerman’s direction. The Zoom S II was a track spike produced by Nike in 1985, with Red White and Blue uppers inspired by the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Bowerman started experimenting with sandpaper in the 1960s, and was utilizing the material before he invented his now-famous waffle sole.

Of particular note is the unique metal sandpaper soles on the shoes – which Bowerman was experimenting with for traction.
