For more than thirty years, Catherine Opie has captured the diverse landscapes and communities that compose contemporary American life and culture. Match fire #2 (The Modernist) is among a series of photographs accompanying The Modernist (2016), Opie’s first feature film. Inspired by Chris Marker’s film La Jetée (1962), the film uses still photography to tell the story of a struggling artist whose frustrations eventually erupt into acts of arson, setting fires to L.A.’s mid-century modernist buildings.
