“I like the idea of having a simplified shape, one that can be understood easily, and yet suggest geometric or even mathematical properties.” – Bryan Hunt
Horizontally penetrating into space, Airship (Zethus), a sublime example of Bryan Hunt’s Minimalist ethos, was created in 1979, five years after he first began his significant Airship series. “By addressing proportions, balance, and light, the airships transform a room and disregard its boundaries,” Hunt has said. Installed high on the wall, Airship (Zethus), like many of the artist’s sleek variations on the abstracted zephyr shape, maintains an amazing presence in space. Composed of a lightweight spruce and balsam wood frame, which retains a textured, expressionistic surface, and covered with silk paper and aluminum leaf, the present work plays with gravity and light, revealing the infinite possibilities of sculpture in Hunt’s adept hands.
