Giovanni Battista Pittoni

This majestic and jovial Bacchus floating in the clouds is an important rediscovery to add to the corpus of the Venetian painter Giambattista Pittoni. It is unpublished and in good condition, despite its thick yellow varnish and the addition of some details by a later hand, probably including the still life elements in the bottom part of the painting.

The format and line of sight indicate that this painting was part of a decorative ensemble. It was undoubtedly preceded by a modello whose existence was already known and which confirms that this work – of exceptional quality – can be attributed to Pittoni himself. The modello (oil on canvas; 43.5 x 32.5 cm) was published in 1979 by Franca Zava Boccazzi in her catalogue raisonné of the artist (F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venice 1979, no.224 p. 176, repr. fig. 198). It shows Bacchus in a tighter format, with some variations to the urn against which the god leans and to the folds of his drapery. The modello had a pendant Ariadne, which remains to be found in its large format.

C’est une redécouverte importante dans le corpus du peintre vénitien Giambattista Pittoni que ce majestueux et jovial Bacchus flottant dans les nuées. Inédit, il nous est parvenu dans un bel état de conservation, en dépit de l’épais vernis jaune qui le recouvre, ainsi que de l’adjonction par une main plus tardive de certains détails, dont probablement les éléments de nature morte dans la partie basse.

Le tableau, dont le format et la prise de vue indiquent qu’il faisait sans doute partie d’un ensemble décoratif, a sans doute été précédé par un modello dont l’existence était connue et qui confirme l’attribution de cette œuvre, d’une exceptionnelle qualité, à Pittoni lui-même. Ce modello (huile sur toile ; 43,5 x 32,5 cm), publié par Franca Zava Boccazzi dans son catalogue raisonné de l’artiste datant de 1979 (F. Zava Boccazzi, Pittoni, Venise, 1979, n°224 p. 176, repr. fig. 198), présente Bacchus sur un format plus resserré et avec quelques variantes dans le vase sur lequel s’appuie le dieu et dans les plis de son drapé. Ce modello avait pour pendant une Ariane, dont le grand format reste encore aujourd’hui à retrouver.
