Extra large 1:19 scale, approx. 61 in. tall (approx. 641/2 in. on stand), custom handmade model in metal with some elements of plastic composite on 153/4 in. square base with plaque reading "SPACE ROCKET / MODEL 8K71πC-2 / SPUTNIK-2 WITH / LAIKA ONBOARD"Vinyl labels around sides reading: "СОЮ3 СОВЕТСКИХ СОЦИАЛИСТИЦ ЕСКИХ РЕСПУБЛИК" [SOYUZ Union of Soviet Socialist Republic]


On November 3, 1957 the Russian Sputnik-2 became the second spacecraft ever launched into Earth orbit, and the first to carry a living creature, the 13 pound, part-Samoyed terrier, Laika. The purpose of Laika's inclusion was to collect biological data in advance of sending a human into a space environment. Additional equipment include Geiger counters to measure charged particles, and spectrophotometers to measure solar ultraviolet and X-ray emissions, as well as cosmic rays.
