Description
Voshkod-1
Voshkod-1 Project Presentation Rocket Model
Extra large 1:18 scale, approx. 701/2 in. tall model custom handmade model in metal and resin, on stand with plaque reading "Space Rocket Model / Voshkod-1". The sides of the model are labeled "Восход" [Voshkod], meaning "sunrise" or "ascent" in Russian.
Launched in October 12, 1964, the Voshkhod-1 was the first space flight to bring more than one person into orbit, the first to take non-astronauts (a doctor and an engineer) and—perhaps most notably—the first spaceflight without the use of spacesuits. The main purpose of the mission was to determine how a multidisciplinary team of three would interact and work together in the cramped cosmonaut quarters. Initially, the plan was to send two men, but the decision was then to send three, albeit put all of them on a diet first so that the trio could actually fit in the Voshkhod-1 capsule. There was neither a launch escape system or ejection seats.
Of historical note: the mission lasted only slightly more than a day, during which time the Soviet premier, Nikita Khrushchev, was removed from power.
