A Retrospective of the Gemini Program
Eight vintage NASA “Red Number” chromogenic color photographs, 8 x 10 in., with a “A Kodak Paper” watermark on verso. NASA image IDs printed in red in the upper left margin. Photos taken using a 70mm Hasselblad camera.
Collection of 8 vintage NASA red number prints, representing some of the most significant moments from the important Gemini program, as follows:
NASA S-65-30432: Taken on June 3, 1965. Gemini 4 Pilot Edward White floats in zero gravity while conducting the first American spacewalk, shot by fellow GEMINI IV astronaut, Command Pilot James McDivitt.
NASA S-65-61839: Taken on December 15 at 8:37:26 a.m. EST, this photograph shows the TITAN rocket igniting and launching GEMINI VI. Written in blue ink on verso: "GT-6 Launching from pad 17".
NASA S-65-62319: Taken on December 15, 1965, this photograph shows, as printed in blue in on verso:
"GEMINI VI/VII RENDEZVOUS PHOTOGRAPHY -- The Gemini VII / spacecraft is magnificently contrasted against the / earth's sea and clouds below in this oblique view / photographed from the Gemini VI spacecraft. In the / Gemini VII spacecraft were astronauts Frank Borman / and James A. Lovell, Jr. Astronauts Walter M. Schirra, / Jr. and Thomas P. Stafford were in the Gemini VI / spacecraft. This photograph was taken with a modified / 70mm Hasselblad camera, using Eastman Kodak, Ektachrome / MS (S.O. 217) color film. The two National Aeronautics / and Space Administration spacecraft were approximately / 32 ft. apart."
NASA S-66-25779: Taken on March 16, 1966, this photograph was taken from the GEMINI VIII spacecraft and shows the approach to the target docking vehicle, Agena. Soon after docking, the spacecraft suffered a malfunction and began spinning so badly that Armstrong had to make an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean. Printed in blue ink on verso: "GEMINI VIII/AGENA DOCKING--The Agena Target Docking Vehicle / seen from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's / Gemini VIII spacecraft during rendezvous in space. The Agena / is approximately 210 feet away from the nose of the spacecraft / (lower left). Crewmen for the Gemini VIII mission were Astro- / nauts Neil A. Armstrong, command pilot, and David R. Scott, / pilot."
NASA S-66-54455: Taken on September 13, 1966, this photograph shows, as printed in blue ink on verso:
"GEMINI XI EVA -- Astronaut Richard F. Gordon, pilot for the / National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Gemini XI space flight, attached tether line to the spacecraft during / the 16th revolution over the Atlantic Ocean. Distance / above the earth's surface is approximately 160 nautical miles."
NASA S-66-54706: Taken on September 14, 1966, this photograph shows the Western coast of Australia, as seen from the GEMINI XI spacecraft—at its record-high apogee of 740 nautical mile—during its 26th revolution around the Earth.
NASA S-66-63479: Photograph taken from the GEMINI XII capsule of the Sinai Peninsula, with Saudi Arabia on the right, and Nile River seen on the left extending south thru Egypt.
NASA S-66-62757: Taken on November 11, 1966, this photograph shows Agena, the target vehicle for GEMINI XII rendezvous and docking. Written in blue ink on verso: "GEM - 12 - AGENA AT RANGE 55'"
