Description

[Apollo 16]

John Young Next to the Lunar Rover

Color photograph, 8 x 10 in., SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Mission Commander John Young: "The MOON, April 21 1972 / John Young Apollo 16 CDR"

Taken by Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke, this extraordinary photograph shows Commander John Young collecting lunar samples (sample bag in his left hand) and moving toward the bottom part of the gnomon while collecting samples at the North Ray Crater geological site. Of particular note in this photograph is the degree to which Young's spacesuit is soiled during this third and final Apollo 16 EVA.
