Italian, 19th century, after the Antique

This portrait of a Flavian woman is distinguished by the fine quality of the modelling of the marble. The Flavians were a dynasty of Roman emperors, having reigned from 69 to 96 A. D. The antique bust belonged to Mr. Fonseca in the 18th century, dating from the beginning of the 2nd century AD, is now in the Capitoline Museum in Rome (inv. no. MC0434). Special care is here taken in the elaboration of his hairstyle, very fashionable in the Flavian period: her curly hair is styled upwards, beautifully framing her face, creating an effect of contrasts of shadows and light. At the back, the hair is braided and tied up to her head, revealing her beautiful neck.

Ce portrait d’une femme Flavienne se distingue par la qualité de modelé du marbre, travaillé au trépan. Le buste antique, ayant appartenu au XVIIIe siècle à Monsieur Fonseca, et datant du début du IIe siècle après J.-C., est aujourd’hui conservé au Musée du Capitole à Rome (inv. n° MC0434). Les Flaviens sont une dynastie d’empereurs romains, ayant régné de 69 à 96 avant J.-C. Un soin particulier a été apporté à l’élaboration de sa coiffure, très à la mode à l’époque flavienne : ses cheveux bouclés sont coiffés vers le haut, encadrent magnifiquement son visage, créant ainsi un effet de contrastes d’ombres et de lumière. A l’arrière, les cheveux sont tressés et attachés, laissant apparaître son joli cou.
