Description

An icon of Saints Peter and Paul, probably 15th century but restored and transferred to a new panel in the late-19th or early-20th century

Painted in the style of Andrei Rubliev and his circle, the Sainted Apostles shown standing full length on a green ground and holding their attributes, St Peter the keys of heaven and St Paul his gospel, the panel showing traces of nail holes that would have served at some point to hold silver basma

54.3 by 44cm, 21 3/8 by 17 3/8 in.

Acquired at Galerie d'Art Byzantin et Post Byzantin, Geneva in the 1990s
By its colouring, composition and system of highlighting of the garments, the offered icon brings to mind Rubliev’s large standing Deisis panels from the Church in Zvenigorod, which date from the beginning of the 15th century, and which are now on permanent display in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, and Rubliev’s Deisis in the cathedral of the Trinity Monastery.
