A large Russian icon of the Last Judgment, circa 1800
The composition placed between two columns of prayers and explanations, painted on a pale ochre ground, with fifteen torments of hell for specific sins painted along the lower border

The theme of the Last Judgement is central to Christian teaching, and exists both in the western and the Orthodox tradition. Such icons usually took their place in the local, lowest tier of a Church Iconastasis, where it could be clearly seen and examined.
