Description

An Important Swiss Collection (lots 65, 73-96, 171-172, 195-199, 231-234, 253)

A large Russian icon of Christ Pantocrator enthroned, with twenty church festivals on the borders, provincial Yaroslavl, circa 1700

Christ is shown seated on an embroidered cushion on an elaborate Baroque throne decorated with flowers and foliage, angels by his head, Cherubim and Seraphim by his feet, the whole painted in tones of pale green and pale raspberry red, the borders stripped of their original colour, stenciled inventory number on the reverse

97.3cm by 83cm, 38 1/4 in by 32 3/4 in.

The icon would have originally come from the local tier of a church iconostasis, to the right of the Royal Doors. Compare with an icon of the same subject of 1682 by Semen Spiridon Kholmogorets: see the exhibition catalogue The Gates of Mystery, (Roderick Grierson et al., Intercultura, 1994) cat no 95.
