A Fabergé jewelled gold lorgnette, Riga, 1908-1917

the handle applied on one side with six rose-cut diamonds in rhombus-shape fittings centred with cabochon sapphire besides the spring mechanism, struck to the finger loop KF in Cyrillic, 56 standard

length 14.4cm; 5 6/8 in.

Lorgnettes emerged in Fabergé’s oeuvre at the close of the nineteenth century, when the firm gained wide renown for its impeccable objets de luxe. According to Géza von Habsburg, these objets de luxe ‘truly show off the decorative arts as they should be: unique, three-dimensional works through which beauty enters one’s surroundings, one’s daily life.’ In the case of lorgnettes, this beauty was to be found quite literally before one’s eyes (G. von Habsburg, Fabergé: Treasures of Imperial Russia, Fabergé Museum, St Petersburg, 2017, pp. 156-158).
