A Fabergé jewelled gold and purpurin model of a hen, St Petersburg, circa 1900
realistically carved in purpurin, the eyes set with demantoid garnets, the legs made of gold
height 4.5cm; 1¾in.
A nearly identical Fabergé purpurin model of a hen with demantoid garnet-set eyes and gold legs was commissioned by King King Edward VII in 1907 as part of the Sandringham animals and now forms part of the Royal Collection (RCIN 40007).
