The present portrait is a study for Bogomazov's unfinished triptych Sawyers, on which he worked during the final years of his life. While this drawing does not have a direct equivalent in the painting, the headgear suggests that it relates to the figure dressed in white in what was intended to be the central panel of the triptych, now in the collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kiev.
