The lack of signature on the recto, with Gerasimov signing the work only on the reverse, suggests that this painting could have been painted either by assistants, or in the Grekov studio of War Artists. If indeed a studio work, then it is of high quality and was signed off by Gerasimov. Such copies would have been displayed in various institutions until they were removed and destroyed after Stalin’s death. Very few have survived.
