Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Christie's, 9 May 2000, lot 24, where acquired by the Wieg collection.

Cuyp came from a family of painters. He studied with his brother Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp (1594-1652) and was uncle to Aelbert Cuyp (1620-91). He was born and died in Dordrecht but was also active in Utrecht and The Hague.

Even though it is not known whether Benjamin Cuyp ever had contact with Rembrandt, the influence of the latter upon his work was clearly strong, exemplified here in the treatment of light and figures, which is likewise found in Lot 30 of this sale. Cuyp clearly enjoyed focusing on a small number of subjects, which he returned to several times, and the Adoration of the Shepherds is one of the most popular in his œuvre.
