Van Groenewegen travelled to Italy and joined the Bentveughels in Rome from 1615 to 1623: he was known among them by the nickname Leeuw (lion). During that time, he painted various views of ruins, such as the present work, set in captivating Italianate landscapes. This capriccio view inspired by the Palatine Hill in Rome is taken from the same viewpoint as Van Groenewegen's most famous work in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, in which Van Groenewegen incorporates elements from the Palatine Hill and the Forum.1 Another work with a similar structure, though identified as the Castello dell’Acqua Giulia, was sold at Lempertz, Cologne, 12 May 2012, lot 1261.2
