H.-U. Beck, Künstler um Jan van Goyen, Doornspijk 1991, vol. IV, p. 405, cat. no. 1146.
Schoeff, who was probably born in Antwerp, was a neighbour of the landscape painter Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) in The Hague. His only known works are landscapes, executed between 1640 and 1654, and of which the present work, monogrammed with Schoeff’s initials, is a significant example. The influence of Van Goyen is strongly apparent in this work and in the following two lots.
