William Esdaile (1758-1837), London (L.2617, with his inscription verso '1833 WE 25x')

Throughout his career, Aernout ter Himpel frequently made landscape drawings in the format seen here, the circular composition drawn within a fictive frame, on a square sheet of paper. This is a particularly atmospheric example of one of his works of this type, executed on blue paper, and illustrating figures standing on the bank of a river looking out towards a distant blazing village, with plumes of smoke rising overhead. Two other very good landscapes by Ter Himpel using this circular framing device are in Weimar.1For other drawings by Ter Himpel in this sale, see lots 124 and 126.
