Description
Jacob Duck
Utrecht (?) circa 1600 - 1667
Portrait of a young woman as the Penitent Magdalene
oil on canvas
unframed: 72.4 x 61.1 cm.; 28 1/2 x 24 in.
framed: 75.5 x 86 cm.; 29 3/4 x 33 7/8 in.
Primarily known for his guardroom and brothel scenes, the Utrecht painter Jacob Duck also executed depictions of single figures, such as the present work. Here we see an elegantly-dressed lady in the guise of Mary Magdalene, identifiable as such through the attribute of the skull.
A oval copy on canvas, of similar dimensions (75 x 61.5 cm.), is recorded by Rosen (see Literature).1
