J. Rosen, Jacob Duck c. 1600-1667. Catalogue raisonné, Amsterdam 2017, p. 247, cat. no. 150, reproduced.

Primarily known for his guardroom and brothel scenes, the Utrecht painter Jacob Duck also executed depictions of single figures, such as the present work. Here we see an elegantly-dressed lady in the guise of Mary Magdalene, identifiable as such through the attribute of the skull.

A oval copy on canvas, of similar dimensions (75 x 61.5 cm.), is recorded by Rosen (see Literature).1
