Dirck Verhaert was born in Haarlem, but he also lived in The Hague and Leiden. He is renowned for his landscapes: river, ports, cityscapes, and Italianate landscapes such as the present work. Given the subjects of his paintings, one may assume that the artist travelled around Europe.
