Like Abraham Genoels (see lot 89), Adrian van der Kabel spent some time in Rome, working there from 1659 until 1666.  He was a member of the 'Bentveughels', the somewhat unruly informal guild of expatriate Dutch and Flemish artists in Rome, and as was their custom, his fellow artists bestowed on him a nickname: 'Geestigheid', which translates loosely as 'Wittiness' or 'Jocularity.'
