With J. Leger & Son, London and Brussels, by 1932 (as Isaac van Ostade);
Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Art & Antiques Group (AAG), 9 November 1998, lot 49 (erroneously as on canvas), where acquired for the Wieg collection.
Brother of Jan Miense Molenaer (1610-68) and Klaes Molenaer (1626/29-76), Bartholomeus lived in Haarlem with Jan Miense almost all his life. He is mostly renowned for lively genre scenes such as the present work. The choice of subject - the butchering of a pig - depicts a crucial moment of rural life usually associated with the autumnal months.
