A couple reading by candlelight
Point of the brush and brown wash over black chalk, within pen and brown ink framing lines;

Abraham van Strij was greatly inspired by the masters of the 17th century. In the case of his landscapes, the primary influence came from Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691), but Van Strij's interior scenes clearly look to those of Pieter de Hooch (1629-after 1679), in terms of their subjects and use of light.
Couples shown, as here, in intimate, candle-lit interiors feature in a number of Abraham van Strij's drawings. One, dated 1816, and showing a young boy and girl dining by candlelight, is in a private collection1, while the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, has a beautiful depiction of a young girl and boy looking at drawings by candlelight.2
