A pair of large Imari dishes 

Edo period, late 17^th century  

the deep dishes with broad rim, decorated iron red and gilt on underglaze blue, the central roundel with buildings beneath a maple tree, beside a cascading waterfall, bordered by a band of chrysanthemums, the rim with fan-shaped and lobed panels containing tree peony and chrysanthemums behind banded hedges, the reverse with peonies and scrolling foliage 

Each 48 cm., 19 in. diam.
