A large drum body (otsuzumi)
Edo period, 17th century
the wood core of the drum decorated in Kodaiji style, in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and nashiji, with butterflies hovering among foliage beside an ox-cart, alluding to scenes from the Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari), the top with an open fan, tomoe mon and a further ox cart, all on a black ground
