Dusseldorf, KAI 10, No Illusions, September - December 2008, p. 14, illustrated in colour (group image; titled as Egge)
The present work Untitled (2007) by the Berlin based artist Manfred Pernice is exemplarily for the artist’s correlation between form, colour, volume and proportion in relation to the exhibiting space and the space between the work and the spectator, overall coming together in the question of the context of art.
The body of the sculpture is created with different sized and coloured wooden boxes which are stacked on top of each other creating a tower architecture that is movable within the space. With the constellation and assemble of the coloured pieces in the present work Pernice implements an art historical reference, the linear abstraction of Lyonel Feininger, transforming it into the three-dimensional space of a sculpture architecture. This reference shows the artist’s discussion about thematic and formal translation in contemporary art.
