The Master of the Gold Brocade

This composition is very comparable to the Virgin and Child by the Master of the Gold Brocade in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon.¹ The same Madonna and Child are seen in reverse in compositions including that by The Master of the Magdalen Legend in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Belgium,² as well as in some examples on canvas by the Master of Dijon.³ Other examples by the Master of the Gold Brocade include one which sold at Mak van Waay, Amsterdam, 27 February 1923, lot 13; one with Galerie Mestrallet, Paris, 1936; and one which sold at Lempertz, Cologne, 25 November 2000, lot 1180.
