signed on the inn sign centre left, with a pair of spectacles (bril in Dutch)

oil on copper

unframed: 19 x 28.5 cm.; 7¾x 11¼in.

framed: 27.5 x 36.5 cm.; 10⅞ x 14⅜ in.

Mrs Elliot, Norwich (according to a label on the reverse);
Dr Hans Wetzlar, Amsterdam, by 1963;
His posthumous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby’s, 9 June 1977, lot 12, when acquired.
Laren, Singer Museum, Modernen en Toen 1570-1630, 15 June - 1 September 1963, no. 31 (incorrectly listed as plate 33 but in fact not reproduced).

A presumably larger version on canvas, with differences limited to the figures, is in the collection of the Fondazione Banca di Roma.1 Cappelletti dates it to the second decade of the 17th century.
