A river landscape with a fort

signed on the inn sign centre left, with a pair of spectacles (bril in Dutch)

oil on copper

unframed: 19 x 28.5 cm.; 7¾x 11¼in.

framed: 27.5 x 36.5 cm.; 10⅞ x 14⅜ in.

Mrs Elliot, Norwich (according to a label on the reverse);
Dr Hans Wetzlar, Amsterdam, by 1963;
His posthumous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby’s, 9 June 1977, lot 12, when acquired.

Laren, Singer Museum, Modernen en Toen 1570-1630, 15 June - 1 September 1963, no. 31 (incorrectly listed as plate 33 but in fact not reproduced).

A presumably larger version on canvas, with differences limited to the figures, is in the collection of the Fondazione Banca di Roma.¹ Cappelletti dates it to the second decade of the 17th century.
