Rotterdam, Museum Boymans, Jeroen Bosch, van Geertgen tot Scorel: Noord-Nederlandsche primitieven, 10 July – 15 October 1936, no. 97;
Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Middeleeuwse kunst der Noordelijke Nederlanden, 28 June – 28 September 1958, no. 101.

The sovereign crown above a 'V' and the inventory number '224' are painted onto the reverse of the panel. This was the insignia of Victoria, Princess Royal, Empress of Germany and Queen of Prussia (1840–1901), the eldest child of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, who married King Friedrich III of Prussia in 1858. The same painted signet is found on the reverse of the canvas of a painting by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini, sold in these Rooms, 23 January 2014, lot 194, which came by descent from the collection of King Friedrich III, and his daughter Princess Viktoria von Preussen (1866–1929).1 It would appear likely that the old label on the reverse, written in English and attributing the painting to Jan Gossaert, called Mabuse, dates to this time.
