Eva van Kessel married Bartholomeus de Kies van Wissen (1614–1679), an important Haarlem citizen, in 1640. The present work was almost certainly originally a pendant to a portrait of the sitter's husband, and though no known counterpart to this painting is known, a likeness of Bartholomeus may be found in a painting by Jan de Bray, datable to 1660–65, which was once (erroneously) proposed as a possible pair to this portrait.1The same coats-of-arms of the De Kies van Wissen and Van Kessel families are also found on a pair of paintings, also by Ravesteyn, sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 10 May 2006, lot 40 (for EUR 72,000).2 However, it is believed that those arms were added to the portraits later and wrongly so, as the sitters bear no resemblance to this portrait of Eva van Kessel, nor the De Bray portrait of Bartholomeus de Kies van Wissen.
