A workshop version of the prime painting by Nicolas Régnier now in the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.1 This scene depicts the tragic fate of the two lovers Hero and Leander. In her despair at finding the corpse of Leander on the shore of the Hellespont, Hero flung a woven mantle around herself and plunged to her death in the sea below.
