Description

Property from a Belgian Private Collection

Southern Netherlandish, Malines, early 16th century

Female Saint

walnut, on a wood base

marked with the three-bar mark

figure: 34cm., 13⅜in.

39.5cm., 15½in. overall

Private collection, Belgium;
by descent to the present owner
Although it bears the three-bar mark of Malines on the reverse, this refined figure of a female saint appears far removed from the more stylised poupées de Malines that flourished in this centre of woodcarving. The statuette is instead reminiscent of Brussels sculpture within the orbit of the Borman family, such as the Mary Magdalene by Jan Borman I in the Art & History Museum, Brussels (inv. no. 2992).
