Description

After Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564)

Italian, 17th century

The Risen Christ

white marble, on a Verona marble base

statue: 89cm., 35in.

base: 12cm., 4¾in.

This accomplished marble figure of Christ is based on Michelangelo’s Risen Christ housed in the Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome, which was commissioned by Metello Vari and Pietro Castellani in 1514. Its first version was discarded due to a black inclusion in the marble and was eventually given to Metello Vari and placed in his garden courtyard. In 1521 Michelangelo left Rome and delegated the completion of the second version to his pupils; the sculpture was completed by Frederico Frizzi that same year.
