Description

The Property of the Downside Abbey General Trust

Studio of Jusepe de Ribera, called Lo Spagnoletto

Játiva, Valencia 1591 - 1652 Naples

Saint Matthew[?], half-length, holding a set square

oil on canvas

unframed: 78 x 65 cm.; 30⅝ x 25⅝ in.

framed: 90 x 75 cm.; 35⅜ x 29½ in.

This work shows Saint Matthew (not Saint Philip), half-length, holding a set square and not a crucifix, as previously described.

This painting is a studio copy after the prime version by Ribera in the Museu Víctor Balaguer, Barcelona.1 Prof. Nicola Spinosa does not mention this version in his 2008 catalogue raisonné, but does acknowledge that a number of replicas exist.2
