Little is known about Giovanni Carboncino, who was a pupil of Matteo Ponzone in Venice. He was born in Treviso and there painted three large scenes from life of the Blessed Henry Suso for the Dominican church of St. Niccolò.
Francesco Morosini was elected 109th Doge of Venice from 1688 to 1694, at the height of the Great Turkish War. He was notably fond of his cat, even going to battle with it, and following its death had the creature embalmed and taken to the Museo Correr in Venice where it still resides.
Another portrait by Carboncino of Doge Francesco Morosini is in the Museo Correr.1 A full-length by Bartolomeo Nazzari of this sitter, closely related to the present portrait, is also in the Museo Correr.2
