Both artist and sitter were dwarfs. Anna Sheppard was in the service of Queen Henrietta Maria and upon her marriage to Richard Gibson, an occassion that was held at court, she was given away by King Charles I.

The couple had nine children, of whom three became successful painters. The best known of these was Susan, who also worked as a miniature painter, using her married name of Susan Penelope Rosse. All the Gibson children were of typical size.

There is a double portrait of the couple by Sir Peter Lely at the Kimbell Art Museum, Forth Worth.
