This lot contains ivory. Due to recent changes in the laws of many countries (e.g. US, France) Sotheby’s recommends that buyers check with their own government regarding any importation requirements prior to placing a bid. For example, US regulations restrict the import of elephant ivory and prohibit the import of African elephant ivory. The sitter was the daughter of Victor Amadeus III and his wife Infanta Maria Antonia of Spain. She married, in 1773, Charles, Comte d'Artois, the youngest grandson of Louis XV of France. During the French Revolution she fled France with her husband and took refuge in her homeland of Savoy. After her death the Comte d'Artois became King Charles X of France.
