This drawing is thought to depict Muller's London studio at 22 Charlotte Street in Bloomsbury. The large Egyptian town scene, which can be seen on the easel, would appear to date the work to after 1839, the year Muller returned from Egypt.

The artists seen hard at work are likely to include Muller's pupil, Edward Dighton, and his friend James Chisholm Gooden, who N. Neal Solly (an early biographer) describes as 'often at the Charlotte Street studio'.1
