Sir Bruce Ingram (L.1405a),
by inheritance to his nephew, Michael Ingram (his collector's mark, not in Lugt),
by whose executors sold, London, Sotheby's, The Ingram Collection: Drawings and Watercolours from the Collection of the Late Michael Ingram, 8 December 2005, lot 10 (as Circle of Sir Anthony Van Dyck, Study of a Youth, Head and Shoulders),
where purchased by the present owner
Cambridge, Fitzwilliam Museum, March 1952
It has been suggested, by Dr. Zahira Véliz, former curator of the Apelles Collection, that this grand and sensitively drawn study of a man, executed in a combination of red, black and white chalk, is stylistically close to the Spanish artist, Juan Carreño de Miranda (1614-1685) and could be by an artist working in his circle.  Carreño de Miranda drew inspiration from the Flemish Masters and was very much inspired by Rubens.
For further examples of this artist's chalk drawings see: Carreño de Miranda dibujos, exhib.cat., Madrid, Biblioteca Nacional de España, 2017.
