inscribed on the reverse of the frame: T Hearne / author of the Antiquarian / of Great Britain / sketched by / his friend / Henry Edridge;

together with an ink portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as J.M.W. Turner, R.A., by Sir Francis Grant (1803-1878)

Thomas Hearne was a successful topographical artist whose work was to have an influence on the young Turner and Girtin, while they studied at Dr Monro's academy (see lot 188).

In 1786 Hearne, along with the engraver William Byrne, published The Antiquities of Great Britain.
