In 1810, Peter de Wint married Harriet Hilton, the sister of his great friend and fellow artist, William Hilton. The couple lived in Golden Square, London close to another leading watercolourist, John Varley. Although de Wint travelled a great deal in search of new landscapes, patrons and pupils, the couple were devoted to one another and their marriage was a happy one.

This sensitive and intimate portrait also highlights de Wint’s avant-garde use of watercolour.
